Why Sharks Matter
Sharks help shape healthy ocean communities. Explore their role, discover what makes them vulnerable, and learn how thoughtful conservation can make a difference.
Shark facts
Ancient, diverse, and essential
Sharks are not one kind of animal with one story. Their long history and many forms reveal how deeply they are woven into life in the ocean.
Sharks were swimming in Earth’s oceans long before the first dinosaurs appeared on land.

Why sharks matter to the whole ocean
Ocean life is connected through food webs. By influencing the abundance, health, and behavior of other animals, sharks help shape the communities around them. Their presence can support biodiversity and keep one part of an ecosystem from overwhelming another.
That balance can be difficult to restore once it is disrupted. Because many shark species reproduce slowly, losses may accumulate much faster than populations can replace them. Protecting sharks is therefore not only about protecting a single animal; it is one part of caring for the habitats and living communities that share the ocean.
